Another Year, Another Space Report

About this time of year, we slow the pace (very temporarily) to sit back for a moment and reflect on a challenging project just successfully completed.

That project is The Space Report 2011: An Authoritative Guide to Global Space Activity. This is the 5th Space Report we’ve finished, having had the design development role, and the privilege of helping the Space Foundation produce this fine academic report, since 2006.

This month we finished all our jobs associated with the project—and made that tough-to-meet deadline—with discipline and dignity, delivering the 160-page printed and illustrated document, the hyperlinked CD and the e-book versions in time to premiere at our client’s signature annual event, the National Space Symposium. And we did it with several seconds to spare. Late breaking data always makes this a demanding job.

Up to the minute and infused with graphs and exhibits, the best imagery from 2010, and an outlook on the future, The Space Report provides information valuable not only to those working in the space/aerospace sector, but to every person around the globe interested in technology or its application. The story of space enterprise is about working on the edge of knowledge and pushing it further; and so this book is for everyone who is engaged in learning more.

It’s an achievement for which Space Foundation, our client of many years, can be justifiably proud. The Space Report puts a quantitative and qualitative face on space activity across the globe. This document is targeted to decision makers, entrepreneurs, government agency and military leaders in communications, finance, defense, homeland security, earth observation, microgravity research, launch, exploration, entertainment and other activities—businesses on the ground or on orbit. And yesterday, a Space Foundation team briefed legislators on Capitol Hill, leading to more people eagerly awaiting next year’s edition and increasing the book’s authority and influence.

This project illustrates how well a team today can work long distance using the digital technologies available. We barely feel the miles between our two primary offices, and don’t skip a beat when our client is in upstate New York or Huntsville.

To our project leader, Micah Walter-Range, the compass on this challenging journey, and his leadership in Colorado Springs that supports this considerable research report and global outlook: Thanks for the space ride.
