Women on the Rise, Peñuelas Style
There are some things that go unnoticed in life, but Public Relations extraordinaire Neyssa Garcia Toucet will not be one of them. The great woman behind the great Mayor of Peñuelas, Walter Torres, is an exceptional example of excellence and a great reason to celebrate the modern woman of today.
This young, articulate and enchanting lady has been associated with politics for years. At her young age of 28, she has worked as a public relations agent and communications specialist with several political figures. Some of these include collaborating in the area of communications with the very Sila Mari Calderón, and Department of Health Johnny Rullán. Today, she happens to work under one of the most influential political characters of the island, the very head of the Mayor’s Association of Puerto Rico. Her uncle Alberto Feliciano was Mayor of Peñuelas himself, which associated her with politics from a very young age.
Neyssa was born in and studied diligently at the University of Sagrado Corazón and obtained her Bachelor’s in Communications, as well as a minor degree in Public Relations and Journalism. She is currently working on her Master’s degree in Public Relations. She has worked with the Communication Office of the San Juan City Hall, the Central Communications Office of the Government of Puerto Rico, the Secretary of Health of Puerto Rico, Arteaga & Arteaga, and the Damas Hospital in Ponce. Currently, she is Public Relations Consultant for the City of Peñuelas/Mayor Walter Torres Maldonado and Public Relations Account Executive for the Hispanic Market for Brandt Ronat + Co., an advertising Company in Merritt Island, Florida.
This article was meant to highlight Neyssa’s accomplishments in honor of the Puerto Rican women who work hard day in and day out to not only make a living, but make a career out of the work they do to make a living. Part of her job is to help Mayor Walter Torres as he engages in the progress of the different projects that are taking place in the city of Peñuelas.
Neyssa is also a single mother. Proud parent of a 3-year-old Natalia Isabel, Neyssa prides herself in trying to balance being the best professional as well as the best mother. She brings that warmth and simplicity to her work as she relates to the people of her town everyday. “It’s all about hugging everyone, greeting them with a kiss, they are the people that are there for you when you need to resolve. They are the ones that make it possible for me to do my job.”
One of the key projects at this time is Mega Puerto. Neyssa feels that “This is one of the most impacting projects that we will have in the upcoming months. It will directly affect the cities that I work with, Peñuelas, Guayanilla, Ponce… This project will bring greater enterprises and manufacturers, as well as create jobs directly and indirectly.” Neyssa’s specialty in public relations creates endless opportunities for her with this project. She says she wants the community to know her services are at their disposal.
The community in Peñuelas knows Neyssa. A woman who does not hide her love for the people which she serves. Working for Mayor Torres makes her a strategic part of the every day events that make up the town itself. Neyssa is aware that she is one of the top Public Relations Agents in the country, in response to this she says, “I love what I do. I love being behind the scenes and making things happen and counseling and giving advice to my clients.”
When we asked if she would consider running for office some day she says, “It has not really crossed my mind. Sometimes I picture my Mayor being in office forever, and I like my field so much, that I do not see myself directly in a political position.”
Finally, we asked Neyssa about what it means to be a woman. She does not hesitate as she responds and says; “First of all, it’s a blessing from God, just being a woman, because it means many things. We have to be the strong and the weak one at the same time. We have to be submissive but also know how to defend ourselves. I’m a single mother so I have to be both mom and dad. Truly, we women have a great challenge before us. I do not see it any longer as having to be better than men. I do not see us as a minority anymore. I see that we are setting the pace for even men at times. I want equality, that is what I desire. We had Sila Marie as our first woman governor which was a challenge we endured, and we were close to having the first woman candidate for President in Hillary Clinton. Women face many challenges today, and they work hard to prepare themselves. That is what I believe truly matters.”
